The Analysis Division (AD) is indispensable to any process analyzer professional, from technician level to design engineer. The nature of on-line process analytics is such that people spend their entire career in the field and the learning never stops. It is a mix of chemistry, physics, electronics, software, control engineering, sample handling, common sense, perseverance and black magic. The ISA Analysis Division is a collection of approximately 900 professionals, some who trace their career to the origins of process analytics. This paper mainly discusses the challenge to optimize process parameters to produce the required range of distillates at the highest yields, while taking into account the characteristics of the crude oil to be processed to ensure maximum efficiency of the crude distillation unit.
